Books are the one easy resource we have to be able to learn from experts today. We may have MOOCs, Google and more but a book always has that sense of satisfaction and learning which is unparalleled yet.
Today a reader, tomorrow a leader – Margaret Fuller.
I read books as a hobby and as a way to learn from the experts. I prefer books on leadership and money for the most part. I also dabble in fiction as you should too. There is one life hack I learnt on this. Always have 2 books to read with you. One non-fiction and one fiction. Read non-fiction through the day or after your work day. Keep the fiction book to read 30 mins before your bed time. It helps you by avoiding screen time right before you sleep and takes you to the wondrous world of the author easily getting you ready to sleep and dream!
Here are my top 10 books for you to read to learn from leaders and progress in the software industry.
Radical Candor by Kim Malone Scott
The richest man in Babylon by George S. Clason
What got you here, won't get you there by Marshall Goldsmith
Your Money or your Life by Joe Dominguez and Vicki Robin
The psychology of money by Morgan Housel
The Millionaire Next Door by Thomas J. Stanley
Ultralearning by Scott H. Young
Think and grow rich by Napoleon Hill
Start with why by Simon Sinek
Rich dad, poor dad by Robert T. Kiyosaki
I have interspersed leadership and money related books throughout and its not accidental. Managing one's money and being aware of how to do it is one of the fundamental skills for any engineer or for that matter any professional. They may go on to gather the deepest knowledge in their field but the knowledge of money is so fundamental my recommendation is to study it with as much interest as you do for subjects in your own field.
