What do top product companies look for in freshers?

Congratulations! You just graduated. Or perhaps you are in your 3rd year preparing to apply for internships and full time roles very soon! You want to be in the top product company when you graduate. What can you do? Is there something specific these product companies look for?

I am not trying to share any secret recipe for success here. I will speak more from experience when we look to hire graduates either for internships or for full time roles.

Usually, companies understand fresh graduates are not the same as lateral hires. Fresh grads come from a college environment and have spent time in theory more but some may have some intern experience or running their own projects. So, what do they actually look for?

Fresh grads can distinguish themselves by having these skills in their resume:

  1. Personal projects they have worked on and which is active in Github

  2. Learning relevant frameworks or technology with an accompanying project to showcase that knowledge.

  3. Solid understanding on computer science fundamentals like operating systems, data structures, algorithms and more (if interviewing for a software role. Else same for electronics background).

  4. Good in competitive coding so that they are able to clear the first round (filtering round where perhaps entire college can sit for) and gain an interview. Beyond that, competitive coding skills do not gain extra points.

  5. Really interested in and spent time volunteering.

  6. Research papers if they have worked on in college and if accepted by reputed publications like IEEE or others.

Apart from this, once you clear the first round which is usually a competitive coding round, you need to mainly have good communication skills and eagerness to learn. Everybody knows you are not an expert yet and you need not be as you are just getting out of college. It is recommended to not have airs that you are expert even if you have spent good time learning a new technology. Remember, the person interviewing you may have been working on that same technology for a number of years. If you can have deep knowledge in the technologies or projects you have mentioned in your resume then you should be all set.

Finally, you getting in will depend on your problem solving skills, computer science fundamental knowledge and communication skills. Also, do not get hung up on a few companies that you want to get into. Prepare well and if possible to apply or gain an interview in your dream company do give it a shot. Else, have a good backup as the main point post graduation is to get into a job to gain practical experience. You can always try your dream company having 1+ year experience as well! Best of luck!
